Tribute to Alderman Roger Robinson

Camden is very sad to learn of the death of long-serving former councillor Roger Robinson.

Roger served a total of 38 years as a councillor across two spells and was Mayor of Camden from 2001-2002.

He was first elected in 1964 as a councillor for St John’s ward, a role he held until 1978. Following a break, he was re-elected in 1998 to the St Pancras ward and then to St Pancras and Somers Town until 2022.

During this time, among many responsibilities, he chaired the Disability Oversight Panel and worked as a Camden Disability Champion to help Camden become an inclusive place for all.

In 2000, Roger was awarded an OBE for his work in the community and on disability issues. Due to his long service for the council, in latter years Roger was informally known as “the Father of the Chamber”. He was made Honorary Alderman of Camden in 2022.

Councillor Richard Olszewski, Leader of Camden Council, said: “On behalf of Camden, I’d like to send my condolences to Roger’s family and friends, and all who knew him, at this sad time.

“Roger was truly a Camden institution – he was there at the very first meeting of Camden Council. He was absolutely dedicated to helping Camden residents – particularly those in his patch of Somers Town and St Pancras. It is rare for a councillor to be loved by their constituents but Roger achieved that by working day and night to stand up for their interests.

“He was a man of passion and principle. A staunch fighter against fascism and racism and a proud advocate for the rights of disabled people. Throughout his life he was a voice and campaigner for people facing disadvantage or hardship.

“Roger will never be forgotten by Camden. He’ll be greatly missed.”
