Dear resident,

We recently reviewed our estate cleaning service and we are making changes to the way that the external areas of our estates are cleaned.

Following a successful pilot of the new cleaning arrangements on housing estates in Kilburn, West Hampstead and Swiss Cottage since October 2008, we have decided to extend the scheme to estates across the borough over the next few months.

We have agreed these changes so that we can improve the cleanliness of our estates and allow our caretakers to focus on internal cleaning of the blocks and other duties, such as health and safety, supporting vulnerable residents.

From Monday 25 January 2010, our street cleansing contractor, Veolia, is extending its existing service to cover the external areas of your estate. Cleaning the communal areas inside your block will remain the responsibility of the Council caretaker.

Veolia will be responsible for a weekly sweep, litter picking, spot cleaning and removal of fly tips in the external areas of your estate. If there is a problem with the cleaning to the external areas of your estate please call the Street environment services call centre on 020 7974 6914.

Our caretakers still have a vital role to play, with everything else remaining their responsibility. Activities such as washing down of light fittings, signs, changing of light bulbs, health and safety inspections, inspections of play areas, removal of graffiti and the reporting of communal repairs remains with Council staff.

If you have a query about the new cleaning arrangements please contact your estate services manager, Lucy Gbadebo on 020 7974 4295 or email lucy.gbadebo@camden.gov.uk.

Yours faithfully,

David Padfield
Assistant Director, Housing Management
